Children's National Hospital receives Magnet redesignation
Highest honor for nursing excellence received for the third time
WASHINGTON — For the third time, Children’s National Hospital has been designated a Magnet® hospital. This designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, is given to hospitals that demonstrate the highest standards of nursing and patient care.
“Our nurses at Children’s National go above and beyond in all that they do. They are committed to providing outstanding care to the children and families they serve,” said Kurt Newman, M.D., president and CEO of Children’s National Hospital. “I’m so proud of our nurses and how they support and empower one another to become leaders in research, innovation, quality and education.”
Magnet-recognized hospitals have demonstrated lower patient mortality, fewer medical complications, improved patient and employee safety and higher patient and staff satisfaction. Magnet-recognized hospitals have some of the most advanced nursing practices in health care. Only 7% of hospitals across the country have achieved Magnet status.
“This Magnet re-designation demonstrates the sustained commitment and dedication of the nurses at Children’s National to providing the highest quality of care to patients and their families,” said Linda Talley, M.S., B.S.N., R.N., NE-BC, F.A.A.N., vice president of Nursing and chief nursing officer at Children’s National.
Nurses at Children’s National actively work with patient families to help them make informed decisions about their health care options. Through various leadership councils, Children’s National nurses create solutions and integrate them into the care delivered each day in units and across the continuum of care.
“Magnet designation is a reflection of Children’s National nursing excellence, and also of the outstanding support and collaboration from physicians and staff across the organization,” said Kathleen Gorman, M.S.N., R.N., F.A.A.N., executive vice president for Patient Care Services and chief operating officer at Children’s National.
The Magnet Recognition Program seeks to advance quality in an environment that 1) supports professional nursing practices, 2) disseminates nursing best practices and 3) promotes positive patient outcomes. Children’s National previously received Magnet designation from the ANCC in 2010 and 2015.
