Curriculum
The goal of the Pelvic Reconstruction Fellowship is to understand how to evaluate and treat patients with pediatric pelvic reconstruction problems.
Colorectal Objectives
- Understand the newborn assessment of associated malformations and anorectal malformations
- Recognize the different types of anorectal malformations
- Understand the proper newborn radiologic evaluation for anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung disease
- Develop expertise in the surgical management of the index colorectal reconstructive conditions, particularly as they relate to the indications for reoperative surgery
- Develop expertise in the surgical management of ARM and HD cases requiring reoperations for male (rectobulbar, rectoprostatic and no fistula)
- Understand the medical management for the variety of colorectal problems
- Understand the surgical interventions for fecal incontinence/functional constipation
- Understand the assessment of complex Hirschsprung disease with postoperative soiling or obstructive symptoms
Urologic Objectives
- Describe the physiology of normally functioning lower urinary tract
- Understand how to perform and interpret complex urodynamic studies
- Read and interpret uroradiologic studies
- Describe the relationship between bladder dysfunction and renal injury
- Detail the medical and behavioral treatments for urinary incontinence
- Develop expertise in complex urologic reconstruction
- Develop expertise in genital (male and female) reconstruction in children with anorectal malformations
- Radiographic evaluation and management of vesicoureteral reflux
- Radiographic evaluation and management of hydronephrosis
- Interpret urodynamic studies
- Evaluate urinary tract infections
- Understand factors in renal injury
- Understand treatment of urinary incontinence
- Evaluate genital abnormalities
Gynecologic Objectives
- Understand normal vs abnormal perineal anatomy
- Understand the physiology of female pubertal change, indications and management of menstrual suppression and assessment of the outflow tract
- Develop tools to recognize and best assess anomalies associated with pelvic floor, vagina and Mullerian structures
- Attain skills to surgically correct gynecological anomalies
- Gain skills to counsel patients regarding long term gynecologic outcomes, including sexual functioning and obstetrical risks, outcomes and best mode of delivery
