Fragile X is a genetic condition that can cause a range of learning and behavioral problems from mild to severe. Physical issues also can occur as the child grows, but they are usually less significant. Speech and language disorders, autism, anxiety and other behavioral disorders are the major aspects of Fragile X that require evaluation and management. Fragile X is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability in males and females. However, many cases are not diagnosed at an early age or at all.
Why Choose Us
Children in the Fragile X Program at Children’s National are cared for by a dedicated team of specialists. We also can refer patients to other specialists within Children’s National or in the Washington, D.C., area for treatments such as gastroenterology, occupational therapy, physical therapy or psychiatry.
If your child has a diagnosis of Fragile X, it’s important to be evaluated for services as soon as possible. Young brains are still developing, and early intervention gives children the best chance for developing to his or her potential.
Services We Offer
The Fragile X Program at Children’s National provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for individuals and families affected by Fragile X. We offer the following services:
Diagnosing and Managing Fragile X
Symptoms of Fragile X vary from child to child and are often, but not always, milder in girls. Children with this disorder may not sit, walk or talk as soon as other children their age. As they grow, they may have mild to severe learning problems or developmental disabilities.
Many children with Fragile X have trouble paying attention and may be hyperactive. Boys are more likely than girls to have trouble with speaking or understanding language. Both sexes can be bothered by sensory stimulation such as bright lights, loud noises and touch.
At Children’s National, we offer screening tests that can help determine the cause of developmental delays in children. If Fragile X is suspected, our experts will prescribe a blood test that checks for the inherited gene mutation to provide an accurate diagnosis.
There is no single treatment for Fragile X. However, a combination of therapies can help you and your child manage symptoms and minimize the effects of this disorder. Our specialists will work with your family to develop a therapy plan that is tailored to your child.
