  • Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant younger than age 1. It is most common between 2 and 4 months old.

  • Researchers don't know the exact causes of SIDS.

  • There is no way to tell which babies will die from SIDS.

  • Most babies who die of SIDS have 1 or more risk factors.

  • There are many possible risk factors. These include having the baby around cigarette smoke, placing the baby to sleep on a soft surface or  co-sleeping with parents or siblings.
