Meet the Team
Michele Mietus-Snyder, M.D.
Michele Mietus-Snyder, M.D., is a preventive cardiologist, clinical research scientist and Director of the Children’s National Hospital Bioenergetics Significant Interest Group. In 2012, she initiated Team Kid POWER™ (KiPOW!), a novel academic-community collaboration with D.C. public schools and George Washington University Medical Students. The program brings a mentored-behavioral change model into district elementary and middle schools to strengthen local school wellness policy, and is the cornerstone of Dr. Mietus-Snyder's community advocacy work. Nisha Narayanan, M.D.
Nisha Narayanan, M.D., is a pediatric emergency medicine fellow at New York University. She worked with Dr. Mietus-Snyder between her first and second years of medical school on a small clinical trial demonstrating the power of lifestyle change to favorably move metabolism. She went on to co-found Team KiPOW™ with Dr. Mietus-Snyder while at The George Washington University School of Medicine and again at Children’s Hospital Orange County where she did her pediatric residency training. She continues to promote its national expansion, a testimonial to the power of the Team KiPOW™-mentored behavioral change model.
She received her undergraduate degree in the Humanization of Medicine from the University of California, Berkeley where she was valedictorian. She received her M.D. from The George Washington University in 2014 with a focus on health policy where she won the U.S. Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Award and the Department of Pediatrics Award. She completed her pediatric residency at the UC Irvine-Children’s Hospital Orange County in the Critical Care Track.
Dr. Narayanan has a consistent record of involvement and leadership in community engagement and health advocacy. She has won several awards and grants for her work with KiPOW!, including the AAP Young Physician Community Engagement Award, the FACE 2.0 Poverty Grant, the Anne E. Dyson Child Advocacy Award, and a Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) grant.
She is passionate about pediatric obesity, cardiometabolic health disparities and health policy. She believes that obesity is an epidemic that must be attacked on a systems level and loves seeing KiPOW! get children excited about kale, their hearts beating fast and eating rather than drinking their fruit!
To learn more about KiPOW! and how you can join the community, please contact Dr. Narayanan.
