The Academic Pediatric Acute Care Fellowship is comprised of clinical shifts and electives relevant to pediatric acute and urgent care. Components of the fellowship include: weekly conferences, several workshops on various aspects of pediatric urgent care and rotations with dentistry, dermatology, ophthalmology and more.

Fellowship Structure

Core Clinical Experience

Core clinical activities comprise 40% of fellowship time, while the rest is dedicated to scholarly, educational, research, and didactic activities. Fellows are provided with direct and indirect supervision from experienced pediatric emergency medicine and acute care providers in the main Emergency Department (ED) and Fast Track spaces. Fellows also participate in a two-week orientation before starting clinical duties to gain familiarity with hospital and ED systems.

Didactics and Teaching

Fellows participate in weekly departmental conferences and hospital-wide fellow didactics. Fellows also facilitate educational sessions for rotating fellows, residents and medical students and supervise junior learners in the emergency department and Fast Track spaces.

Academic Opportunities

Fellows are mentored in scholarly activities that relate to professional development, leadership, research and education. A Clinical Competency/Scholarly Oversite Committee provides dedicated feedback and mentorship for each fellow based on their individualized learning plan.

Administrative

Fellows participate in administrative committees, operations and quality improvement initiatives. Fellows are encouraged to learn aspects of financial management, business planning and human resource management in preparation for future administrative roles.

Research

The Division of Emergency Medicine places a strong emphasis on research, with numerous active clinical studies and a dedicated research team. Fellows also have access to the hospital’s vast resources for traditional, translational, clinical and quality improvement research. Fellows are expected to have meaningful, active participation in the planning and execution of scholarly projects throughout the program, and present or submit for publication a scholarly product at the end of the year.
