Resident Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Residency Program Recognized for Inclusion
Children's National Pediatric Residency Program was recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education with the 2022 Barbara Ross-Lee, DO Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award for our work to diversify the underrepresented physician workforce and create an inclusive workplace.
At Children’s National Hospital, we appreciate that diversity (including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity) in our residency program is essential to achieving excellence in our medical education and patient care missions. In addition, we recognize the imperative to diversify the face of academic pediatrics where the research, education, and policy agendas are made, and ensure that all pediatricians are fluent in the language of health equity. In these ways we aim to contribute to the dismantling of structural inequities. The diversity of our residency program and the paths taken by the students and residents whose careers have been influenced by Children’s National are a testament to our commitment to this mission.
We have developed multiple pathways to enhance diversity, inclusion, and equity within our residency program, our institution, and as well as the field of pediatrics and academic pediatrics at large. The principal components of our approach are:
- Advancing Diversity in Academic Pediatrics
- Recruitment and retention of diverse residents
- Well-being and support of diverse residents
- Resident education
We aim for all residents to graduate as strong pediatricians equipped with the knowledge and skills to drive equitable outcomes for all children.
