Hydronephrosis Referral Guidelines
Hydronephrosis is the abnormal dilatation of the kidney. Hydroureter is the abnormal dilatation of the ureter. Patients can have either hydronephrosis or hydroureter or both. Most hydronephrosis does not harm the kidneys, but some cases are associated with poorly kidney function.
Several diagnoses can result in urinary tract dilatation. Causes include:
- Ureteropelvic junction obstruction
- Ureterovesical junction obstruction also known as Megaureter
- Vesicoureteral reflux
- Ectopic ureter
Hydronephrosis can affect one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) kidneys and it resolves on its own in about half of all cases.
