Our Services
Children’s National Hospital has partnered with Safe Kids DC to prevent unintentional injuries in the Washington, D.C., region by focusing on these five priority areas.
Bike and Pedestrian Safety
Young kids are at risk of injury when they run into the street without looking or fail to look both ways when crossing the street. Our bike and pedestrian safety programs are designed to teach children and parents traffic safety dos and don’ts. Through interactive scenarios, children learn about traffic signals, when to walk/bike, the importance of wearing reflective clothing, the dangers of distracted walking/biking, as well as other safe pedestrian behaviors.
Car Seat Safety
Safe Kids DC and its community partners operate several car seat inspection and installation stations throughout the city to teach families how to safely transport children. All inspection stations are operated by nationally certified child passenger safety technicians (CPSTs) and instructors (CPST-Is). This service is available to patient families and the community at large.
Car Seat Inspections
Several car seat inspection and installation stations can be found throughout the city to teach families how to safely transport children.

Sleep Safety
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death among infants one month to one year of age, taking the lives of about 2,500 children each year in the United States. An additional 3,500 infants die each year from other causes of sudden and unexpected infant death (SUID), such as suffocation.
Children’s National Hospital has partnered with DC Health Safe Sleep Program to educate parents, families and childcare providers about ways to reduce the risk of SIDS. The Safety Center also offers free Pack N’ Plays to Washington, D.C., residents.
Sports Safety
Our sports safety programs provide education and training to young athletes and their coaches, teachers and parents on how to reduce the risk of preventable sports injuries.
